(Great Blue Herons - photo by Neil Barker - July 2023)
A wood skeleton offers a place of rest and a good view.
The dark water below is teeming with possibilities.
For now though, you stand with your companions, watching in silence.
I took this photo in late July 2023. I was just beginning my hike at the conservation area and saw these four Great Blue Herons all perched together. Perhaps they were a family that had moved to the area as Mud Lake provides a lot of opportunities for herons. I’ve seen Great Blue Herons, Black-crowned Night Herons, Green Herons, and Great Egrets in this area over the years.
2023 seemed to have been a good year for Great Blue Herons in the area as I saw a lot more than in previous years.
Wonderful! It appears you stumbled upon a roosting area. Herons roost at night in bare trees. If you noticed any large nests in the higher branches of the trees, it is their rookery.
Whoa! Awesome verse! Photos not shabby either! Great way to start the day
